Although the book details the top sites around the world in the opinion of the author I would say that over three quarters of these would be included in any 'geeks' list of top scientific locations. For this reason the Geek Atlas is in my opinion an absolute jewel.5/5(6).   But The Geek Atlas: Places Where Science & Technology Come Alive by John Graham-Cumming has changed that for me. This is, in essence, a travel book intended to Author: Nicole Nash.

The Geek Atlas lists different places where you can learn about science, ranging from science and technology museums to fascinating old canal locks and amazing dams and observatories. Despite a heavy dose of locations in the UK and the US, the book includes a few scattered around Europe and Asia. Each entry tells you the story of the place, and gets you excited about going there. The Geek Atlas by John Graham-Cumming, O'Reilly, £/$ HEADING abroad? Don't forget The Geek will tell you if you'll be staying near a slice of Charles Babbage's brain (London), a visible tonne stabilising pendulum suspended from the upper floors of a skyscraper (Taipei, Taiwan), the best place to buy a robotic toilet seat (Tokyo, Japan), or any of the other places Author: Celeste Biever.   The Geek Atlas: Places Where Science and Technology Come Alive, by John Graham-Cumming, is by no means your typical travel guide. And, it is by no means intended only for geeks. In fact, many of the places listed in The Geek Atlas are "must visit" places for any parent hoping to give their child even the semblence of a well-rounded education about science or technology, .

Being a traveling geek reminded me of the great book "The Geek Atlas" by British author John Graham-Cumming. That book, as its title implies, is a compendium of some of the world's most. In Greek mythology, Atlas (/ ˈ æ t l ə s /; Greek: Ἄτλας, Átlas) was a titan condemned to hold up the celestial heavens for eternity after the also plays a role in the myths of two of the greatest Greek heroes: Heracles (Hercules in Roman mythology) and ing to the ancient Greek poet Hesiod, Atlas stood at the ends of the earth in extreme en: The Hesperides, The Hyades, The.

Irrespective of its travel content, The Geek Atlas is a unique and fascinating read for the information and overview of its wide range of topics. If there is a fault in the book, it is with its title. Atlas, in Greek mythology, son of the Titan Iapetus and the Oceanid Clymene (or Asia) and brother of Prometheus (creator of humankind).

In Homer’s Odyssey, Book I, Atlas seems to have been a marine creature who supported the pillars that held heaven and earth apart. These were thought to rest in the sea immediately beyond the most western horizon, but later the name of Atlas was transferred.
